Never received an acupuncture treatment before? You’re probably wondering what your first session is going to look like! Here’s a step by step guide to what your time in the treatment room may look like.
My personal technique is to be as gentle as possible. What I want for you is to fully surrender to your healing and let the needles work their magic. Communication is key, and I will make sure that you’re comfortable every step of the way, regularly checking in that everything is still feeling okay.
Your appointment will begin with the two of us going over your intake to provide me with clarification and allow for me to get more information on any pressing issues. No information is “TMI” I would like to hear everything you feel compelled to share. Even the smallest details can help me piece together what the root of the issue might be and could be the missing piece to directing us to the root issue.
Once we’ve gone through all your health history, I will feel your pulse and look at your tongue, then step out for you to get cozy. One of my favourite things about acupuncture is that you can keep a majority— if not all your clothing on, making for a much more comfortable experience. Essentially, you can undress completely to your comfort level and you’ll be completely covered up and cozy under a blanket.
Needles will be inserted into the body and depending on the treatment, the face as well. Each needle is individually packed, sterilized, and single use. Depending on your preference I can explain reasoning for some of the needles or we can talk about other things to distract you if needed.
After all the needles have been inserted, depending on the treatment chosen, you’ll be left to lie for a specific amount of time before they are removed again.
Afterwards, take it easy for the rest of the day and be sure you drink lots of water. The only side effects you may notice could be sleepiness, increased energy, or there’s always a potential of bruising, but I try to be extremely careful to avoid this. Acupuncture isn’t one size fits all so it’s impossible to say how your body is going to feel after a treatment.
The key to acupuncture is commitment, if you follow the recommendations given, you’ll see the best results. Recommendations given can include herbs, tea, dietary changes, and treatment frequency. Always be easy on yourself as to not overwhelm, just be sure you adjust your expectations based on what compliance you can offer. Any and all changes to better your wellbeing are positive.
At the end of the session you’ll be given an ideal treatment frequency and potentially herbal, dietary, or any other wellness recommendations. Let’s start your journey to healing! Balance begins here.
