Entering Spring The Chinese Medicine Way
Finally! The snow is melting and the sun is coming out. We’ve entered the season of spring.
But, what does that mean in traditional Chinese medicine?
The season of spring represents growth and renewal. It’s also the season of the wood element which corresponds with the liver and gallbladder. First, let’s go over the characteristics of these organs as to give you an idea of what it could look like if these organs are out of balance.
The liver is vital in the smooth flow of Qi, it controls the sinews/tendons and nails, and it opens to the eyes, having a large influence on vision.
On the other hand, the gallbladder is in control of decision making (or lack thereof), affects courage, and supports digestion.
Knowing this information helps you to see what could happen if these organs are dysregulated. During the springtime the energy is very “yang” so it is important to try to manage frustration, anger, stress, and cultivate flexibility.
The first way you can ensure this season goes smoothly for you is through movement. Daily movement is extremely important in keeping your Qi flowing smoothly throughout the body. This movement can be whatever you prefer but some examples can include qi gong, tai chi, yoga, pilates, or walking.
Another simple way to support your constitution is through diet. There are a variety of foods you can add to your diet. These foods include dark leafy greens, sprouts, and sour flavors such as lemons, limes, and vinegar. All of these foods are helpful in regulating the liver.
Another way to support your Qi during this time of transition is through acupuncture! Acupuncture has many points that can support Qi and balance the liver and gallbladder; along with treating potential symptoms you may experience such as allergies or headaches.
A combination of all these things will make for a very smooth and happy spring! Move through spring with the intention of growth, flexibility, and expansion.
